About the role

Electron and X-ray diffractive imaging techniques, such as ptychography, can be used to explore the properties of complex materials with high spatial resolution. The development and application of these techniques is growing rapidly and to drive this forward at Diamond we are currently searching for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral research assistant (PDRA) to help with the development of ptychography to address current scientific challenges.

The candidate will work with leading experts at the Diamond x-ray and electron facilities, and in collaboration with Andy Maiden, University of Sheffield, to help develop methods of dose-efficient 3D ptychography that can access significantly larger sample volumes than is currently possible, in particular for the imaging of biological samples, methods and strategies for extending the volume over which ptychography operates, in particular, for the imaging of biological samples. The candidate will also explore state of the art ptychographic reconstruction algorithms and methods to reduce the damage or dose to samples using electron and x-ray ptychography.

This role will allow the candidate to develop and further hone their expertise within an internationally renowned multidisciplinary environment.

About You

The ideal candidate will hold an appropriate First Degree or relevant Postgraduate Degree (or the ability to demonstrate significant relevant experience) and have a strong background in coherent diffractive imaging techniques.

The person should ideally also be experienced in:

  • Electron microscopy or synchrotron radiation with scientific programming or mathematics skills.
  • Using advanced mathematics and software engineering techniques for application development.
  • Ptychography or related diffraction imaging techniques 
  • GPU or HPC code development 
  • Modern programming languages such as Java, C++ and Python
