Background

The UK has invested £99m in the National Satellite Test Facility (NSTF), in construction at the RAL. This facility, along with the existing facilities, will provide a world class set of co-located facilities for the final integration and testing of space payloads and satellites used.

The primary output from all the test facilities is Digital Data and the Infrastructure Group within the Environmental Test Division (ETD) supports the acquisition and long term curation of this data through a careful program of planned upgrades and maintenance as well as reactive maintenance to support operational failures.

Job Description 

The Facility IT Team provides the IT support to the operational test equipment run by the ET Division by providing a number of services. It does not deliver primary desktop support (which is provided by a dedicated departmental helpdesk team) or network infrastructure, authentication and security (which are provided at STFC level). The Facility IT Team does however work very closely with them to ensure needs are met as well as protecting the organisation as a whole.

You will report directly to the Senior Facility IT Engineer and support them in realising the needs of the Division and its customers. It is a mixture of a hands-on role that will involve the support of instrumentation systems across three separate buildings on the Harwell Campus in a wide range of environments including cleanrooms, server rooms and offices. Some of the work will also be desk based where remote access to systems is possible and permitted.

The duties and responsibilities are as follows:

·      Administration of Active Directory, SCCM and Antivirus systems

·      Installation of new hardware and software as required to support the operation of the facilities.

·      Implementation of a planned OS and Application patching process, including scheduling periods at risk.

·      Deployment of hard disk clones for new and replacement equipment, maintenance of up-to-date clone images of critical systems

·      Managing a spares inventory including hot swap spares

·      Disaster recovery procedure development, testing and implementation

About you

  • Knowledge of the Windows operating system
  • Experience of application support (installation and configuration)
  • Good working knowledge of PC hardware
  • Working knowledge of Active Directory administration
  • Good awareness of IT security

For the Senior role you will need to be able provide evidence of the above as well as the following:

  • Background in management of IT security including definition of VLAN configurations
  • Experience configuring and fault-finding serial or network interfaces to data acquisition systems
  • Ability to navigate a basic LINUX environment through a local or remote shell for software patching or system restarts.
