We have a new and exciting opportunity for an individual to join us as our Motion Control Support Engineer at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source facility, based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. We are in the process of building a motion control support team and this post is the first step to achieving our goal. The postholder take the senior role of Section Leader and they will have the unique opportunity to recruit and shape a team that will support our network of motion control systems.
About the role
You will join the ISIS Electronic and Electrical User Support Group (EESUG), where you will be responsible for the maintenance, servicing and repair of the motion control systems that form an integral part of the ISIS suite of beam instruments. You will also contribute to technical reviews where your expertise will feed in to the design of new motion systems and you will also be involved in the testing, installation and commissioning of new motion systems.
A vital part of your role will be the development of an effective Motion Control Support Section that is capable of meeting the growing demands of the ISIS beam instruments. Once established, you will oversee the workload and training of staff within the Motion Control section and provide guidance for all health and safety issues. You will have the opportunity for travel to conferences and workshops within the UK and overseas to showcase the work of the Motion Control Support Section.
When running, ISIS operates on a 24/7 basis and so you will be part of the on-call system, where occasional working out of hours may be required. An on-call allowance is payable.
You will be degree level qualified, or equivalent, in a relevant field of engineering (electronics, electrical, mechatronics), with an in-depth working knowledge of motion control systems and their applications.
You will process a wide range of technical experience, such as system design, commissioning, repair and fault-finding skills, and you will be able to show a creative and adaptive approach to solving problems. You will have previous experience of working in a team environment. Experience in leading a team is desirable but not essential.
ISIS is a high energy proton synchrotron which produces thermal neutrons for science and engineering research. ISIS employs a suite of beam instruments that are capable of carrying out high precision measurements on a wide range of samples, from simple and complex compounds to new alloys, to engineering structures to biological samples and pharmaceuticals.
The ISIS beam instruments use motion control systems to accurately align the samples under test to the incident neutron beam and, in some cases, parts of the beam instruments are also moved using motion systems to achieved the desired experimental configuration. In addition, the neutron beam is often shaped using devices such as collimations to get the optimal beam profile for the sample being investigated. Again, all this is achieved using motion control systems. Without reliable and accurate motion systems for the beam instruments, experiments at ISIS could not happen.
