About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility which accelerates electrons to near light speeds, to produce a light 10 billion times brighter than the Sun. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.

Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities and talented staff are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.

About The Role

We now have an opportunity for a highly skilled and experienced Vacuum Project Engineer or Senior Vacuum Project Engineer, subject to candidate’s experience, to provide professional vacuum, mechanical and manufacturing engineering support/leadership of the delivery of the technical systems of the Diamond facility.

You will provide creative, innovative and adaptive expert input to the specification and mechanical design of new vacuum vessels, systems and components, and their integration in the accelerators and beamlines, based on detailed vacuum vessel manufacturing knowledge and experience (materials, construction, welding, manufacture and testing).

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Pro-actively supporting/leading on all major, challenging, or critical vacuum vessel and component procurement contracts, including production, review and negotiation of technical specifications, obtaining quotations, evaluation of tender returns, contract management, progress monitoring, inspection visits, review and approval of test results, project documentation and record keeping in order to ensure delivery on-time, to budget, and within specification.
  • Supporting/Leading with Procurement on strategies for all vacuum vessel and component procurement activities and relevant supplier development and defining and optimising timescales and costs.
  • Evaluating and auditing vacuum vessel and component suppliers regularly, and ensuring best supplier performance and overall value.
  • Supporting/Leading on maintaining and developing Diamond’s vacuum quality standards and procedures.
  • Training of engineers and technicians in the design and manufacturing techniques that produce vacuum vessels to the required standards.
  • Advising and assisting the vacuum technical team with planning, preparation, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting and maintenance work.

Successful applicants will be appointed as either a Vacuum Project Engineer or Senior Vacuum Project Engineer, depending on the strength of your skills, experience, and qualifications.

About You

You will be educated to degree level in a STEM discipline or demonstrate significant equivalent experience.

You will be an experienced engineer with a practical background in vacuum engineering, including sound knowledge of vacuum vessel and vacuum system design principles, and appreciation of vacuum system instrumentation and test equipment.

You will demonstrate experience of fabrication and precision engineering / manufacturing techniques for ultra-high vacuum vessels, with knowledge of ultra-high vacuum welding technology and inspection, and of selection and procurement of materials for ultra-high vacuum.

You will display the ability to read and understand engineering drawings, to write and interpret technical specifications, and have a good appreciation of project management and contract supervision principles.

Any experience in the areas of vacuum simulations and design calculations, cryogenic and pressure systems, or ultra-high vacuum bakeout will be beneficial.

You will display excellent communication, presentation, influencing and negotiation skills to communicate with staff at all levels, internal customers and suppliers.
