We now have an opportunity for an Open Science Services Manager to join the Scientific Computing Department (SCD), one of the UK’s leading centres of expertise in data-intensive science, and home to sophisticated high-performance hardware. You will work closely with the scientific community to support transparent, reproducible and cooperative research.

your main responsibilities will include:

Service management of a portfolio of Open Science services, including DAFNI and PSDS, including overseeing and adapting service management processes such as monitoring, metrics collection, user support, change control, business continuity planning, patching and upgrades.

  • Coordinating a team providing user support, liaising with other service providers inside and outside SCD
  • Liaising with external data providers, including academic research teams and commercial suppliers of licensed data
  • Working with customers, partners and other stakeholders in the services, representing the service operations as part of the programme management team
  • Overseeing and contributing to the response to user support queries
  • Technical intervention to support the operation of the service platform
  • Managing service evolution, including contributing to service development
  • Overseeing developers bringing new developments into service via DevOps processes
  • Contributing to development of new opportunities to extend SCD’s the scope of the Open Science Systems and Services
  • Line management of staff in the team.

About SCD

SCD provides systems and services supporting the deposit, management access and analysis of research outputs such as documents, data, software and other information, to make them available to the research community in order to enhance the value of scientific results. Two examples of these open sciences services are the Physical Sciences Data-science Service ( that provides UK academics with access to some state-of-the-art chemistry databases, and the Data and Analytics Facility for National Infrastructure ( that provides data and computational resources supporting research and planning related to the UK’s physical infrastructure (transport, power, built environment etc).

The Open Science Services Manager will join a team developing and supporting open-science systems and services to ensure their quality and delivery to the scientific community. The post holder will work with a team of developers and system administrators in supporting users, maintaining quality of service, and developing a roadmap of service improvement, and will also work with team leadership in developing an open science roadmap to provide additional services.

To be considered for this role, you’ll have previous experience in a scientific computing service environment developing scientific computing tools and/or services. You’ll also have programming experience (e.g. Python, PHP).

You will also be expected to lead and work within a team, working with other service providers, inside and outside of STFC.

Experience of a web-server environment (e.g. Apache) or knowledge of open data and open science aims, policy and practice would be advantageous but are is not essential.
