Excellent opportunity for a skilled Mechanical Technician (Machinist/Miller) to work in a leading science environment offering exceptional employee benefits.

As part of UK Research and Innovation, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations and operates at a number of sites within the UK, including the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and many more around the world.

Our Technology Department within STFC provides advanced technology and engineering in support of both STFC funded activities and other high profile international projects.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity to work within the Technology Department’s Manufacturing Facility, which provides a comprehensive support for manufacturing, assembly and inspection to all departments on the RAL site. You will be assisting at the concept stage of each project, ensuring that the mechanical parts and assembly work are in line with the scientific requirement. You will be also be aiding with design, and manufacturing new and novel prototype components.

A new vision for the Manufacturing facility is now being implemented. The successful candidate will be part of that driving force going forward, working as part of a team, helping restructure the facility with greater manufacturing resource to further support all departments within the STFC.

Technicians play a key part in maintaining STFC’s leading edge in research excellence and driving solutions to technological challenges. We are a signatory of the Technician Commitment initiative and are committed to supporting their continual improvement where applicable.

About You

You should have served a recognised apprenticeship or have the equivalent experience in this field and have experience in a cross functional manufacturing role. You will also have comprehensive knowledge and understanding of engineering drawings. The nature of the work will require excellent attention to detail with the ability to work effectively and safely with minimal supervision and as part of a team.

You will have a strong ability to think creatively in solving problems, showing initiative and evaluating alternative courses of action where necessary.
