We have an incredibly unique and exciting opportunity within RAL Space (part of STFC) for someone to join us as a new Multi-Layer Insulation Technician, where you will produce and fit the thermal insulation blankets that are used to protect satellites and their equipment in space.

Salary: £20,129 pa

Location: Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire

We have an incredibly unique and exciting opportunity within RAL Space (part of STFC) for someone to join us as a new Multi-Layer Insulation Technician, where you will produce and fit the thermal insulation blankets that are used to protect satellites and their equipment in space.

Our Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) blankets are hand-made from sheets of reflective material, often with netting to separate the layers. The design and folding of the blankets allow them to fit around space hardware, even if they have a complex shape. MLI blankets are used on almost every satellite that is launched and are critical in protecting from the extreme temperatures in space!

About us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest multi-disciplinary science research organisations. Our RAL Space department has around 350 staff and carries out an exciting range of world-class space research and technology development. We have had significant involvement in over 200 space missions and operate at the forefront of UK Space Research.

Main duties of the role would include:

·      manufacturing blankets to a high standard under supervision

·      assisting in the packing and storage of completed blankets

·      helping to fit blankets to spacecraft and instruments

·      carrying out basic stock control of materials and parts
