The Rosalind Franklin Institute is a new national Research Centre, funded by the UK government through UK Research and Innovation, dedicated to bringing about transformative changes in life science through interdisciplinary research and technology.

The Franklin is in the process of completing its establishment phase and gearing up for expansion.

The newly created Assistant Accountant role will report directly to the Financial Controller and will support and facilitate the finance department operations.

This is very much a hands on operational role working within a small, high performing operational team with a values based culture. The role requires accuracy, timely delivery, enthusiasm, dedication and teamwork.

Your responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

Bookkeeping and general

• Maintenance of bookkeeping records including upload of supporting documentation with the Xero platform and integrated apps

• Reconciliation of bank feed transactions within Xero on a weekly basis and import of commercial card transactions and reconciliation monthly

• Assistance with cash flow management of restricted and unrestricted funds through assignment of tracking categories

• Updating, maintenance and ownership of contact information within Xero

• Input into development and documentation of financial control policies and standard operating procedures for the finance team

• Assistance with ad-hoc bookkeeping inquiries and other ad-hoc activities as directed by the Financial Controller

Month end

• Month end balance sheet responsibilities including timely reconciliation of lead schedules prior to review

• Automation of standard accounting journals, depreciation, prepayments and accruals on Xero

• Month end queries identified, documented and raised with Financial Controller for review

• Support with and provision of detailed income and expenditure reports in establishing cause of budget deviations within themes and reconciliations thereof

• Assist Financial Controller in development of timely Board reports

• Assist Financial Controller with timely Grant reports for Funding Bodies

• VAT compliance including assignment of appropriate VAT categories and drafting of VAT return and reports for Financial Controller review and approval prior to submission

Accounts payable

• Accurate and timely entry of purchase invoices for approval within Xero and integrated apps including matching to PO where applicable, assignment to appropriate account, VAT code and various tracking categories

• Payment runs, identification of invoices for payment in accordance with payment terms

• Entry of batch payments on Xero and issuing of e-remittance advice slips to suppliers

• Assisting laboratory managers with set up of new suppliers and ad hoc inquires

• Reconciliation of supplier statements to Xero purchase ledger

Accounts receivable

• Credit control, review of aging reports and liaison with Financial Controller

• Drafting of automated sales invoices for approval including assignment to account, VAT code and tracking categorie

• Accurate assignment of grant funds to tracking categories to facilitate effective grant reporting

Year end

• Year end duties include assistance with preparation of robust reconciliations and audit deliverables in coordination with Financial Controller

Selection Criteria


• AAT qualified or with a demonstrably similar level of technical knowledge

• Successful track record operating as an Assistant Accountant within a small team

• Strong IT skills including working knowledge of Xero, tracking categories and integrated apps

• Excellent organisational skills

• Stong work ethic and a commitment to values-based behaviours in all you do

• Comfortable taking on new challenges and learning new skills

• Ability to prioritise and deliver


• Previous experience of working in:

o A science-led organisation, and/ or

o A start-up company

o A charity

o Paperless setting

• Knowledge of UK GAAP and charity SORP

Period of appointment: Permanent, Part time (0.6 FTE)

Salary: £27,000 - £30,000 FTE (£16,200 - £18,000 for part time hours)
