About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest multi-disciplinary research organisations. ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is based at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire and is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. It is owned and operated by the STFC. 

Through the use of a proton accelerator and a high power target facility, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of instruments, often described as ‘super-microscopes’. It supports a national and international community of more than 2​000 scientists who use neutrons and muons for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering, and biology.

About The Role

The ISIS Sample Environment Design team has an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineer with specialist knowledge in cryogenic, pressure and high temperature systems to manage the design, development and procurement of its sample environment systems. These systems typically include: high pressure cells, cryogenic vessels; mechatronic systems; vacuum systems, helium fridges, amongst many other novel requests.

Sample environment is a key element in supporting the user community carrying out scientific studies at the ISIS facility and there is an active programme of development of these systems as part of a wider facility growth.

You will be responsible for managing the design, development and procurement of complex systems, as well as designing cryogenic/pressure/vacuum/high temperature systems from first principles.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out appropriate analysis of the systems.
  • Leading programmes of development and testing.
  • Presentation of designs for peer and stakeholder review.
  • Line management of ISIS Design Division staff and contractors.
  • Project management (including scheduling, budgets, planning and reporting).
  • Managing tendering, procurement and delivery of approved designs.

About You

You will be qualified to degree level or HNC/HND in a mechanical engineering based subject, along with relevant experience in the design, procurement and commissioning of complex equipment and systems. You should have a proven ability to analyse and design systems from first principles.

Experience of managing multi-disciplinary teams in the design, procurement and commissioning of cryogenic systems is also essential.

Successful candidates will also have experience in the project management processes required to deliver high value complex projects within a technical environment.

You will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a highly organised approach to work, be self-motivated, innovative and inquisitive, with a desire to gain new skills in a broad range of areas.
