About the Role

We now have two opportunities for Senior Technicians within the Diamond Insertion Device group; one with a focus on technical leadership of the technicians and contractors within the group, and the other with responsibility for managing the group’s laboratory and workshop, although both roles will work closely together.

Insertion Devices (IDs) are permanent magnet arrays which form the main light generators in the facility. They combine high precision assembly techniques with robust structures and precision motion, not unlike large machine tools.

The Senior Technicians will contribute to the assembly, installation and maintenance of Insertion Devices and assists with the testing and commissioning.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and/or making simple jigs/fixtures and tooling to facilitate assembly work
  • Producing simple manufacturing sketches
  • Providing first line diagnosis of electromechanical faults that arise in the operation of the devices
  • Maintaining appropriate documentation of ID assembly and maintenance
  • Assisting in the finding of suppliers and the procurement of mechanical components and consumables
  • Carrying out inspection and acceptance testing of components and subsystems.
  • Following up supply contracts, including visits if required

Some flexibility over working hours will be required during periods of intense activity, and occasional travel may be required.

About You

You will be highly experienced technician with strong mechanical skills and leadership experience from an engineering workshop environment.

You will demonstrate experience of carrying out a variety of light mechanical and electrical assembly tasks, including interpreting mechanical drawings, along with technical experience in one or more of: cryogenics, magnetic fields, ultra high vacuum.

You will demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, to interact with people at all levels.
