About Us Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences. The Electron Bio-Imaging Centre (eBIC) at Diamond provides scientists with state-of-the-art experimental equipment and expertise in the field of cryo-electron microscopy (CryoEM), for both single particle analysis and cryo-tomography.

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a highly skilled and experienced Senior scientific software developer to join eBIC to lead a small team in developing and supporting cutting-edge software for CryoEM, helping to further drive development, automation and information management, and exploiting arising opportunities for the facility.

You will lead on delivering a program of world class software services and developments to enhance and underpin the research and user program at eBIC and our international collaborators.

Through a combination of collaboration and development, you will help refine and deliver existing data analysis and reduction methods and introduce new methods to enable scientists to process and visualise large volumes of CryoEM data and capture experimental information.

You will utilise the close collaborative relationship in place with both the Collaborative Computational Project for electron cryo-microscopy (CCP-EM), and our partnership with the Rosalind Franklin Institute, a new national institute dedicated to bringing about transformative changes in life science through interdisciplinary research and technology development.

You will work with software developers and scientists to lead the development and support of the software required for data acquisition, automation, scientific data reduction and analysis in CryoEM, and to ensure its timely implementation.

About You

You will have a first degree in a STEM subject, along with a relevant PhD or significant equivalent experience.

You will be an experienced Software Scientist, proficient in modern programming languages including Java, C++ and Python, with experience of the full software development lifecycle.

You will have experience and understanding of CryoEM including software development on high-resolution cryo-tomography or Single Particle Analysis, as well as experience of novel methods such as Artificial Intelligence.

You will demonstrate practical experience in a professional, scientific or technical field with experience in using advanced mathematics and software engineering techniques for application development.

You will also display a passion to learn and think creatively for the solutions we provide to enable science, and to apply this passion through the supervision, mentoring and development of staff.

You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills with the ability to interact effectively with staff at all levels.
