Research Scientist : Spectroscopy & Modelling for Atmospheric Sensing

STFC’s RAL Space department carries out an exciting range of world-class space research and technology development. We’ve had significant involvement in over 210 space missions and operate at the forefront of UK Space Research.

The Spectroscopy Group of RAL Space has a Research Scientist post available for a specialist in physical & inverse modelling to support its activities in research, development and deployment of novel laser-spectroscopic instrumentation for highly demanding chemical sensing applications. Many of these activities are underpinned by physical modelling ranging from end-to-end instrument error budget analysis through transport and dispersion modelling to inverse modelling for retrieval of atmospheric composition data.

As a Research Scientist you will be responsible for delivering project results to deadlines. Tasks may include managing the group’s retrieval, modelling, simulation and data analysis resources, developing code for physical modelling, data retrieval or instrument control, developing code for error and bias analysis, and conducting experimental campaigns for the characterization of the physical behaviour of sensing instruments developed in the group.

This is an excellent opportunity to join an agile and motivated team of scientists working on a large portfolio of research projects, and significantly contribute to its expansion through the delivery of state of the art projects for the UK Research Councils, UK Space Agency, European Space Agency, and other institutions and customers. Current projects include:

·        The development of physical models for analysis of instrumental data involving for instance spectroscopic radiative transfer codes or dispersion modelling

·        The development of retrieval algorithms to extract information from spectral measurements and observation systems built in the group

·        The design and implementation of observation system simulations for future mission studies and new instrument developments and deployments

·        The development of data analysis and deployment of laser sensing spectrometers for atmospheric observation.


About you

You may be educated to PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant applied physics or engineering discipline and be looking for your next opportunity. We also welcome applications from those educated to MSc level (or equivalent) together with relevant experience.


You will demonstrate knowledge & practical experience of inverse modelling methods, or similar, for information retrieval. You will be highly motivated and able to carry out challenging research and development work with a systematic approach to problem-solving and operate effectively in a team environment and to demanding deadlines. To be considered for the Band E position you will also have experience in development of inverse methods for information retrieval from atmospheric data.
