About the role
The Department Millimetre-wave Technology Group (MMTG) is seeking a Process and Assembly Technician/Engineer to support the production of high frequency electronic components. This is an exciting opportunity to join a small team of expert assembly personnel, scientists and engineers that deliver on state-of-the-art projects for the UK Research Councils and international agencies, such as the European Space Agency, European Southern Observatory and other leading national and international institutions.
You will play a key role in the assembly of electronic circuits in the frequency range from <1 GHz to 3 THz. The role involves following detailed assembly instructions as well as taking responsibility for the development of new processes. The majority of the assembly work will involve use of stereo optical microscopes to place, fix, and connect to miniature components. Methods include epoxy bonding, indium based soldering and wedge bonding of gold wire and ribbon. Comprehensive facilities to support this work include a dedicated class 10,000 clean room, scanning electron microscope, wire thermocompression bonder and micro-handling equipment. Also required is the undertaking of metal plating processes, to space flight standards, and more general processes required in the Group’s research, development and supply activities.
We are looking for a technician/engineer with excellent attention to fine detail and previous experience of working in an ESD cleanroom of at last ISO Class 7. You will be self-motivated, able to multitask and a real team player with excellent communication skills. An ability to follow written and verbal instructions is key as is the ability to interpret experimental results.
Applicants will have knowledge and direct experience of some of the following with training provided in other applicable areas). To be considered at Band D you will demonstrate many of the below criteria.
• Cleanroom assembly of electronic, photonic, RF, Microwave or Millimetre-wave circuitry from discrete devices with the assistance of a stereo microscope
• Design of masks for photolithography
• Use of a thermocompression wedge bonder
• Experience in using a scanning electron microscope (SEM)
• Assembly of modules containing MMIC components
• Preparation of precision-machined metal parts for electroplating.
• Electroplating of precision-machined metal parts to high standard following procedures.
