5G Network System Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity for a 5G Systems Engineering Architect to join the Ubiquitous Communication Directorate to operate, evolve and support our 5G testbed located in Westcott Buckinghamshire. This is the world’s class centre dedicated to the advancement and exploitation of technologies that will underpin the networks of the future. The Centre is working in partnership with some of the world’s leading organisations, infrastructure and tools providers.

We are looking for enthusiastic 5G Network Systems Engineer who will be responsible for the ongoing development, delivery and operation of the end to end architecture. 

You will become a champion for the centre and develop a deep and extensive knowledge in the field of future networks and the evolution of both satellite and terrestrial networks.

Background skills

You will be an accomplished telecoms/ IT/ mobile networks system engineer with the ability to work successfully with a variety of end users to deliver first class operational systems to industry partners. In addition to the technical work, problem solving, decision making are integral to many aspects of the role. Significant elements of this role will require a high degree of autonomy within a defined project environment, resolving potential technical or architectural conflicts in complex individual 5G projects whilst maintaining alignment with the overall 5G test-bed architecture strategy.


MSc or PhD in Networking & Data Communication, Telecommunications systems or similar discipline.

Knowledge & experience

  • Significant working experience in mobile network architecture e.g. Evolved Packet Core (EPC), Radio Access Networks (RAN) and associated ancillary services e.g. HSS, PCRF ,IMS
  • Expertise and practical knowledge gained on virtualised infrastructure platforms (e.g. Openstack, Open Baton) for network orchestration.
  • Experience of Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualisation (NFV)
  • Expertise in LTE and LTE-A architecture ( Release 14 )
  • Familiar with mobile network protocols
  • Familiar with 3GPP standards (including Release 16) and 5G-PPP initiatives
  • Accomplished and very knowledge on Linux ( Red hat ,CentOS, Fedora)

Key skills

  • Good communication skills (verbal and written English)
  • Experience with Cisco or Juniper networking equipment, e.g. Cisco IOS and Junos

Quick facts: This is a permanent role directly with Satellite Applications Catapult. We are based in Harwell with great public transport connections from all of Oxfordshire as well as London.
