Archangel Lightworks is a start-up specialised in space laser communications based in Harwell Space Campus, Oxfordshire. Founded in mid-2017, we have secured long-term funding and successfully demonstrated several novel prototypes related to laser transmission and efficient perpendicular solar concentration. Our mission is to 100x the data downloaded from orbit to meet the demand from the growing satellites market, especially Earth Observation CubeSats.

We are seeking an ambitious and experienced talent with a strong background in satellite communication systems and technical leadership to join our rapidly growing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the system definition of a satellite communication system.

*System design and implementation of high-performance free space optical communication terminals (1-100Gbps+).
*System and subsystem level trade analysis on a performance and cost basis.
*Definition and tracking of system requirements from initial use case definition, subsequent subsystem and component requirement derivation.
*Definition and maintenance of technical budgets (link, pointing, mass, volume, data budgets).
*Definition of system data flow, at physical and data link layers minimum.
*Interfacing with external customers, partners, suppliers and external subcontractors on a technical basis as appropriate.
*Create test plans, specifications as needed.
*Technical management (requirement, interface, planning, risk, configuration, ect)
*Interested applicants may also consider starting first as a fixed-term consultant while rolling into a permanent role although this is less preferred.

*Technical degree, e.g. systems engineering, satellite communication engineering, electronic engineering, physics, aerospace engineering.
*3-5 years of very relevant experience or more.
*Experience of satellite communications or free space/fibre optical communication.
*Experience in system definition at data link layer and physical layer.
*A logical approach to problem solving and presentation of information.
*Strong mathematical fundamentals including linear algebra and numerical methods.
*Proficient English, positive attitude, self-driven and interested in working in a start-up environment.
*Proficient in MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

*Familiarity with relevant CCSDS and ECSS standards is desirable.
*Model based systems engineering experience and system modelling tools (e.g. Enterprise architect) is desirable.
*Experience with C-Band optical communication components including detector technology (coherent, non-coherent), photodetectors, optical amplifiers, laser diodes, modulators, high speed digital electronics, adaptive optics is desirable.
*Numerical modelling experience (e.g. effect of atmospheric turbulence effects on optical links) is desirable.
*Proficiency in MATLAB, python is desirable.
*AIT experience, particularly high-speed electronics or optics would be beneficial.
*Demonstrated experience across full system lifecycle and a willingness to get involved in hands on work.
*Knowledge of control systems, GNC, pointing acquisition and tracking systems would be beneficial.
*FPGAs, VHDL, IP Core implementation would be beneficial.
*Experience working in an agile development environment would be beneficial.
*Experience with supplier management, supply chain management would be beneficial.
