Senior Software Scientist - CryoEM

Join eBIC and the Data Analysis Software Group to lead a team developing and supporting cutting-edge software for CryoEM.

Your role

eBIC (the Electron Bio-Imaging Centre based at Diamond Light Source) provides scientists with state-of-the-art experimental equipment and expertise in the field of cryo-electron microscopy, for both single particle analysis and cryo-tomography. Currently eBIC houses five Titan Krios microscopes, a Talos Arctica, Scios and Aquilos cryo-FIB/SEM and Glacios for industry applications.

To help drive development, automation and information management further and to exploit arising opportunities within our facility, we are looking for a Senior Software Scientist to lead a small team, work closely with the eBIC scientists and harness international collaborations. The position is within the multidisciplinary Data Analysis Software Group, and also involves close collaborative work with Diamond’s Scientific Computing Group and CCP-EM. Through a combination of collaboration and development, you will help refine and deliver existing data analysis and reduction methods and introduce new methods to enable scientists to process and visualise large volumes of CryoEM data and capture experimental information.

Your new team

You will work as part of an experienced team of researchers, within eBIC and the data analysis software group, to add to the extensive expertise that the team has in experimental method development, data collection, data processing and analysis. You will collaborate with other team members and our internal and external scientific users. You will have the opportunity to help others develop professionally and to create and deliver new and exciting projects. We envisage that your experience and underlying knowledge will be an indispensable asset to ensure further development of the capabilities of eBIC and the wider CryoEM community.

What you'll need to succeed

Your ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment (interfacing with scientists and software engineers in the pursuit of scientific excellence and delivering and designing innovative software) is a crucial component to the success of this project. You need to be proficient in technologies such as Python and have experience and understanding of CryoEM including software development on high-resolution in-situ structures by tomography (or Single Particle Analysis) as well as experience of novel methods e.g. Artificial Intelligence for particle selection and classification. You will hold practical experience of the full software development lifecycle and above all, demonstrate a passion to learn and think creatively for the solutions we provide to enable science.
