STFC’s RAL Space department carries out an exciting range of world-class space research and technology development. We’ve had significant involvement in over 210 space missions and operate at the forefront of UK Space Research. We have a fantastic opportunity for an Embedded Senior/Software Engineer to join the Production & Software Group of the Imaging Systems Division within RAL Space. The Imaging Systems Division has a long standing heritage of excellence in Space flight going back over 50 years. We build electronic systems for spaceflight and hence quality is paramount in our work.

About the role

Reporting in to the Production and Software Group Leader you will be responsible for software design, development and test within the division. Responsibilities will include:
• coding to the required standard in various languages including LabVIEW, IDL, Python, C++ or C and runs either on Windows or Linux operating systems
• test verification and validation
• interfacing to hardware items.
• assisting users operating the software, making changes and corrections where required
• support & maintenance for previously released or installed software
• product assurance
• working with other Software and with Hardware engineers to give an optimum design and solve problems
• project documentation including requirements specifications, design documents, test reports and user manuals.

In the Senior role, you will also have responsibility for Project Management from specification through to implementation stages and Software system engineering, with responsibility for the system design and the review & approval of technical specifications and documents.

About You

We would really like to hear from you if you are educated to degree level or equivalent in software engineering with experience of specifying and designing software for embedded systems. With previous experience of programming in ANSI C you will thrive on solving technical problems and should have previous experience or some knowledge of:
• software standards e.g. ECSS-E-ST-40, ECSS-Q-ST-80
• programming guidelines e.g. MISRA
• programming in LabVIEW
• software standards e.g. ECSS-E-ST-40, ECSS-Q-ST-80
• software configuration management tools, defect tracking tools, and peer review e.g. SVN, SonarQube
• tool chains and debug tools such as GCC
• reading schematics and data sheets for components.
